Web 2.0

In our last lesson, we continued on the Internet front, trying to understand the term Web 2.0. To do this we felt it would help us from answer these few questions... Web 2.0 Questions

1. Who is David Gauntlett?

  • Works at Westminster
  • He says that, “the media is no longer a stable entity that can be taught about or studied coherently in such a broad way”
2. What does he say about the Internet and media studies?

  • He says that, “the media is no longer a stable entity that can be taught about or studied coherently in such a broad way. It is too big, too fluid, too complex – too different.”

 3. What phrase did gauntlet ‘coin’?

  • ‘Media 2.0’

4. Gauntlett argues that people don’t get ‘ represented’ by the media any more – what happens instead?

  • Instead they use web 2.0 platforms to make their own media, share it with the world and thus represent themselves.

 5. How will media studies students move away from ‘Media 1.0’ way of doing things?

  • ‘Questioning the traditional approach to people who ‘produce’ media and people who ‘use’ media and by exploring peoples contemporary media experiences by encouraging creative responses’

6. What did Dan Gillmor write?

  • ‘Citizen journalism’

 7. What do Gauntlett and Gillmor agree on?

  • ‘Web 2.0 enables ordinary people to participate in politics and news’

8. Explain John Hartlets theory?

  • ‘Describes the shift from a demand-led market of creative industries to social networking market’

 9. Do we actually live in a global village? If not, why not?

  • I feel that a select few counties have access to this ‘global village’, however as less than 5% of the population have access to the internet this does act as a barrier.

10. Who is making money out of the most popular web 2.0 sites?

  • The companies that make the money are the big companies as this is who most of the social networking sites are owned by.

11. How are most of us using web 2.0 sites, and how is this the same as Web 2.0?

  • “Read, watch, play and listen – but not to create and upload

12. Explain how we can analyse ‘Britney’ through web 2.0?

  • ‘News commodity’

 13. How has the internet changed fan culture?

  • Internet can accelerate fan interpretations and re-imaging’s of media products.

14. What does Matt Hills say about the Dr Who material on the internet?

  • ‘Describes how these extras cleverly designed to add to the narrative experience without interrupting the scheduled flow.

15. Try to summarise ‘what does it all mean’ on page 22? Key Aspects of Web 2.0

  • Interpersonal computing
  • Web services
  • Software as a service

We watched a video on youtube to help us understand the term, 'Web 2.0': To get some more information on 'Web 2.0' I decided to do some research, I used this website to make it easier for me to understand the real definition of Web 2.0:

http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/W/Web_2_point_0.html

Web 2.0 is the term given to describe a second generation of the World Wide Web that is focused on the ability for people to collaborate and share information online. Web 2.0 basically refers to the transition from static HTML Web pages to a more dynamic Web that is more organized and is based on serving Web applications to users. Other improved functionality of Web 2.0 includes open communication with an emphasis on Web-based communities of users, and more open sharing of information. Over time Web 2.0 has been used more as a marketing term than a computer-science-based term. Blogs, wikis, and Web services are all seen as components of Web 2.0."

History Of the Internet

Recently in our Media lessons we have been doing some research on the: History of the Internet. We watched a film by Melih Bilgil. Here are some of the Key factors we learned from this video. October the 4th 1957 during the cold war was when we first had access to the internet, this was mainly used for military reasons. These are all the reason what the internet is being used for: Military network Commercial Scientific To reduce congestion of Internet file transferring, they break down the files in to smaller files and then when they are at the other end they are put back together again. Atomic – Radio waves, Direct waves, Network – long distance. During the end of the lesson, we were all asked a question, and we found that most peoples answer's to this question was the same. 1. What form of technology reminds you most of growing up and why? I remember when I was younger the first mobile phone, where it would have to be on charge for most of the day, and then when you went out it would only last for around 1 hour, it then developed from phones that were really cool about 10 years ago, to if you had one of them now, it would be embarrassing. This is the video that we studied in class..

There has been several videos that have been uploaded on to facebook recently, refering to the revolution of Facebook. This was was very interesting as it informed me about several facts and statistics which i will be able to use in my documentary. This is very similar to my documentary, and it has helped me pick up some key techniques that I will be able to use.

Socail Networking

I have now decided against doing my production piece on the London riots, the main reason for this is because, I was finding it ver tricky to gathher lots of primary research, and video footage, of what was going on. The other reason why i changed my mind, was because of several programs that are coming to our Television screens in the up and coming weeks, for example: Inside Facebook Social Network (Film)- link below to watch clips of the film. I am also going to do another blog on the film. The Arab Spring http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1285016/

Production planning

Social effect of Facebook Have 3 actors Open sequence, will be one of the actors walking home from school, and going straight up in to their room and sitting on their computer, all evening, then sleeping, then getting up for school again, and carrying out the same routine. This represents modern day. The second sequence will be an actor that comes home from school, chucks his bag in, and within minutes he is going out to meet his friends at a local park, this is to represent what things used to be like, before people relied on social networking to chat to friends. The final actor will basically just be an interviewee, where I will ask several questions to try and prove a point about how much of an effect social networking has had on people life’s, the interview process will look like this… Main part, interviewing people: • Asking people: • How many friends on facebook? • How often they use it? • Whats the main thing you use on the site? • Is it your main use of communication Then turn it on its head, and say: • Where do you live? • How many people do you know down your road? • How often do you talk to these people? Then to close my documentary I will list lots of facts and statistics to back up my research.

The Social Network story

We first started seeing social networking sites come to the internet in 1997, this was the start of the revolution. I have found a video on YouTube that represents when social netowrk sites started, and the impact they are having.
